Aomori City, Towada City

A pure white museum situated next to ancient Jomon-period ruins.

The Aomori Museum of Art, which opened in 2006, was built next to the Sannai-Maruyama site, where Jomon-period ruins are exhibited. With art direction of Atsuki Kikuchi, Jun Aoki—who designed the Louis Vuitton's Ginza store—designed this beautiful structure characterized by pure white space and simplicity. The hall-like exhibition room in the center of the museum is large enough to exhibit ballet backdrops painted by Marc Chagall sized at about 15 meters wide and 9 meters high. The permanent collection houses the work of Aomori-related artists, but special exhibitions are also held from time to time, and the Aomori Museum of Art has become Aomori’s single most popular spot among art-lovers from all over Japan.

This 8.5 meter tall “Aomori Dog” is the museum’s symbol.

The most popular work at the Aomori Museum of Art is Aomori Dog by contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara. This huge sculpture is 8.5 meters high and 6.7 meters wide. Situated semi-outdoors, this piece changes its appearance depending on the season and the weather: it's buried under snow in winter and lit up by shining sunlight in summer. There is an extensive collection of work by Aomori-born artists, including Shiko Munakata, who won the printmaking Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale, as well as Toru Narita, who worked on character modeling for the special effects hero Ultraman. The Museum is closed for renovation until mid-March 2016 and resumes its exhibitions from spring.

Enjoy installation-type exhibitions at the Towada Art Center.

If you’re an art lover, you should also drop by at the Towada Art Center. This contemporary art museum was founded in 2008, and its permanent collection includes about 40 works commissioned from contemporary artists around the world. The method of exhibition is worth paying attention to. Visitors are welcomed at the entrance by the colorful Flower Hose sculpture. Inside the museum are a 4-meter female sculpture by Ron Mueck and an interactive art by Tomás Saraceno. Returning outdoors again, a colorful garden by Yayoi Kusama and the huge Ghost by Inges Idee greet you. This dynamic space, resembling a theme park, has earned high praise from art lovers overseas, and some people travel all the way to Towada specifically to visit the Towada Art Center.
